The Cappa

Tradition since 1924
A hotel with history

In the summer of 1915, the co-owner of the Pension Bellevue (today the old Bellevue residential and commercial building opposite the state road), Miss Louise Bolliger, submits a building application for the construction of a new hotel building on the lakefront parcel of the Pension Bellevue. The building permit is issued on August 11, 1915. On September 25, 1915, a joint-stock company (AG) is founded.

The architect was the then well-known Gottfried Schneider from Bern. The construction was carried out by the architects Grütter & Schneider Baugeschäft, who were well known in Thun. On November 2, 1915, the Federal Council issues an ordinance to protect the hotel industry. No new hotel may be built. Construction that had progressed to the second floor had to be stopped. On May 1, 1916, permission is granted by the government council of the canton of Bern to finish the building, but not to open it as a hotel.

In the fall of 1918, construction is completed. Another request to open the hotel in the spring of 1919 was rejected. As a result, the AG goes bankrupt on April 13, 1921. The hotel is auctioned back by the shareholders and can finally be opened as Hotel Bellevue au Lac on Saturday, April 12, 1924 - after partial use as a confiserie and lakeside spa.
